ABOUT ME

The Finnish soprano Kaisa Makkonen was born in 1987 in Savonlinna, Finland. At the age of 16, she was accepted to  study at the Upper Secondary School of Art and Music in Savonlinna wherehe studied singing and performing arts under Chieko Okabe-Silvasti. By 2008,  Makkonen graduated with great honor from the Turku Conservatory and by 2012 from the Turku Arts Academy with a Bachelor degree in classical singing. During this time her singing teachers were soprano Lilia Varnas and Jouni Kuorikoski. In the fall of 2012 Makkonen started studying in the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität at the Opera Master Programme. Her current singing teacher is Bojidar Nikolov. Alongside with her studies she attends in different master classes with  teachers such as Tom Krause, Jorma Silvasti,Mikko Franck, Rilla Kyykkä and Mika Kares.

In 2007 Makkonen joined the Savonlinna Opera Festival choir for three summers, where she sang in operas like Turandot, Mefistofele, Carmen, Tosca, and Aida. Makkonen has also been performing with the Savonlinna orchestra and the Bigband.

Fall 2012 Makkonen performed during the Wien modern weeks in the world premiere of Dirk D’ases opera Azrael as Maria with great acclaim. In 2013 Makkonen made her debut as Despina in Cosi fan tutte and Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro.

Kaisa Makkonen met a great misfortune in February 2014 during her studies. Her career as an opera singer almost ended.

She  was diagnosed with a rheumatic disease Takayasu artheritis, which lead to a brain infarct.  As a result of the infarct, she suffered from paralysis on the right side of my body and aphasia.

Her voice and singing was mainly unharmed.

"Kaisa Makkonen's life story of recovery from serious illness will certainly give strength to many in similar difficulties. It takes a lot of courage to come to the audience in that situation. Makkosen's immediate and joyful being hardly left anyone cold, and what the best, singing was pleasant to hear. Makkonen's dark-tone, soft  voice particularly suits well to the arias of Baroque opera." Itä-Savo 20.3.2017
